Piano Teaching Methods for Children and Adults

The piano has been a favorite instrument of many renowned and promising musicians. Its natural exquisiteness and versatility entices a musician to passionately combine his or her soul and emotions in playing the music.

Every piano teacher knows that playing the piano requires more than talent and training—it entails understanding and emotion. The mastery of the piano comes from the person’s initiative, not on the technique. Although there are several standard piano techniques, most teachers prefer to explore interactive teaching techniques to communicate well with their students and help the students enjoy the technique they are comfortable with. Nevertheless, it is proven essential for teachers to tailor their own method than to stick with single approach.

Are you ready to teach to play piano? Here are some of the best piano teaching techniques for children and adults:

Alfred Method

Beginners, who were hesitant from taking piano lessons before, will definitely pray for another instruction once they started playing their first piece. Alfred Method is one of the best methods for beginners. The teacher uses a lot of colored pictures or graphics, software, compact discs, and cassettes to explain position playing, chords, and progression.  This method helps students to easily read intervals and understand intervallic relationship between notes. Another concept of this is to help beginning teachers to have a programmed format to follow.

Bastein Method

The Bastein Method is another great teaching technique for children. It increases the children’s exposure to advanced playing techniques such as fingering and rhythm. It guides children to the correct finger placement, naming notes, and reading interval.

Clark Method or the Music tree

Just like the Alfred and Bastein, Clark Method uses interactive piano teaching resources; however, the Clark is much more competent. From the beginning, the children are introduced to reading intervals and playing the ensemble.
This method develops faster understanding of sight-reading, music terminology, and knowing forms, which is a good start to whip out your piano mastery.

Play by Choice

Adults also need beginning methods to get them started, and one of the helpful techniques available is the Play by Choice. This method was organized from the idea that no two people learn the same concepts in the same exact way.  Play by Choice uses different ways in teaching piano to adults, without constraining the adults to the same, rigid concepts of position playing.

This method helps adults learn to read individual notes, intervallic relationships, and melodic contour. The adults are free to choose whichever piece they want to play or study. Basically, this helps students play on the music or method they are comfortable with, not on style and expedite techniques suggested by books or teachers.

Pace Method

Unlike flashy graphics meant to catch children’s attention, the Pace Method presents concise and simple material to help adults cope with the intricacies of piano instruction. Moreover, the technique does not encourage students to heavily rely on position playing but to employ the technique that interests them better. However, older beginners need to have a lot of practice and, of course, patience to perform better.
